Day 16: Kunming Inner City

Kunming is the capital of Yunnan province, where we will anchor our travels around. Exploring the immediate environment, we came across a local fresh produce market in the Xishan district of the city. The market hosts a large variety of produce from livestock to fruit and vegetables and cooked goods ready for consumption. Through an interview with a local frequent shopper at the market, he revealed that the produce comes from small villages around the city, as well as fish from Dianchi lake south of the city. The market has been around for over 50 years and is the source of the locals purchase, forming a small part of the local history.
Furthermore, tracing the historical origins of water source of the city, we visited the Cuihu Park. The Nine Dragon Pond in the park is the first source of water supply for Kunming, between 1914 – 1973. The contemporary city park since has been made tribute to the Pond, constructed primarily of artificial lakes and a place for visitors to leisurely wander, exercise, sing or feed koi fish.
