Day 31: Industrial Lanzhou

Heading out of Lanzhou’s city centre, we headed up north to visit the more industrial parts of Lanzhou, which produces enough smog to give Lanzhou the rather unfortunate nickname of China’s Most Polluted City. After visiting a few petrochemical factories, we headed to yet another near deserted and gigantic housing complex surrounding an artificial lake, which is seemingly on every Chinese developers’ check list for what makes a ‘successful’ and ‘attractive’ area for one to live in.

Up river from there, we visited a minor dam along the Yangtze River before visiting one of the main bridges over which many of the products from the factories and petrochemical plants travel before heading to various parts of China. Coming incredibly close to crashing our beloved drone and encountering a dead sheep carcass that had probably recently fallen of the bridge, we left to visit the Yellow River Gorges Dam, which supplies the majority of Gansu province, as well as transferring the rest of the energy to neighbouring provinces.
