Day 33: Shapotou Theme Park

Just west of Zhongwei along the banks of the Yellow River is Shapotou, a popular tourist resort for Chinese travellers, who’s combination of fascination for the Yellow River, arid landscapes, and theme parks has led to the development of these sorts of parks in Ningxia Province. Beyond the shady tree lined banks of the river is the harsh desert just beyond.

The resort is filled with cafes and dozens of activities ranging from ferry rides, sitting on a traditional raft made of inflated sheepskin, sliding down sand dunes or ziplining over the river. A particular highlight of the otherwise ridiculously hot day was one enthusiastic visitor who, while ziplining, continually shouted “黄河我来了!” (Yellow River, I’m on my way!”
