The Yellow River Scenic Area is situated northwest of Zhengzhou City, in Henan Province. The Yellow River typically rushes by and demonstrates tremendous force with rolling and falling of the river’s torrents. However, it is currently the dry season and much of the area which is typically filled with water was left over residual mud. Tourism, however, was still going strong with small boats still running tours despite the low water levels.
Typically hidden below the water level – electrical pylons that cross the width of the Yellow River were exposed, revealing the construction used to deal with the heavy flow of water that passes by. An artificial beach with small boat restaurants dotted the waterfront, with pits dug into the ground used as fish tanks for locally caught fish from the Yellow River.
A contemporary monument to Emperors Yan and Huang are also located within the scenic area, is the fifth largest statue in the world, measuring at 106 metres, completed in 2007, to boost tourism to the area. Construction lasted over twenty years.
