Day 44: Shanqiu Water Treatment Plant

Today we had an exclusive visit to the Kang Da Huan Ba Water Treatment Plant in Shangqiu. We were accompanied by Ziqiang Sun, the director of the plant, as we toured their facility that deals with sewage and drain water from the city. It is modest in scale compared to much larger cities, but has undergone comprehensive improvements since 2000. However, overall improvement for city water treatment also depends heavily on the transformation of water use and recovery around the city, bringing into question the parallel developments of hard urban spaces and the necessary infrastructures and services.

The stages of the water treatment range from large object removal to various levels of skimming, aeration, and settlement. Upon leaving the plant, the water supports the large agricultural industry of the Henan province, with any surplus returning the the Yellow River.

As in any major city worldwide, it is a smelly, but necessary job.
